Emily St. James is an American writer, critic and journalist. Formerly credited as Emily Nicole VanDerWerff, she has written extensively about television for outlets including Vox, where she served as critic-at-large, and The A.V. Club, where she was the first TV editor. Her work has also appeared in The Guardian, the Los Angeles Times, Grantland and Slant Magazine.

She graduated from South Dakota State University in 2004 with a degree in journalism. St. James is a writer on the television series Yellowjackets and co-author of the book Monsters of the Week: The Complete Critical Companion to The X-Files. Her debut novel, Woodworking, was published in 2025. She is married to writer Libby Hill.
