## Biography

Eric Maschwitz was a British writer, lyricist and broadcaster. Born Albert Eric Maschwitz in Edgbaston, Birmingham, in 1901, he was educated at Repton School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He worked at the BBC, rising to Variety Director, and wrote under the pseudonym Holt Marvell.

Maschwitz received an OBE in 1936. His film credits include the screenplay for *Goodbye, Mr. Chips* (1939), for which he shared an Academy Award nomination. He also wrote lyrics for popular songs including "These Foolish Things" and "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square". His autobiography, *No Chip on My Shoulder*, was published in 1957. He died in 1969.
