## Biography

Eric Porter (1928–1995) was an English actor of stage, film and television. He trained at Wimbledon Technical College and made his stage debut in 1945. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960 and remained a leading member for many years, appearing in numerous Shakespeare productions and winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Actor for his performance in Rosmersholm (1959).

Porter achieved international recognition for his portrayal of Soames Forsyte in the BBC series *The Forsyte Saga* (1967), for which he received a BAFTA Award for Best Actor. He later played Dimitri Bronowsky in the Granada series *The Jewel in the Crown* (1984). His film roles included Julianus in *The Fall of the Roman Empire* (1964), Colonel Rodin in *The Day of the Jackal* (1973) and Professor Moriarty in the Granada *Sherlock Holmes* adaptations (1984).
