## Biography

Erich Segal was an American writer, screenwriter and classicist. He wrote the screenplay for the animated Beatles film *Yellow Submarine* (1968) and the novel *Love Story* (1970), which he also adapted for the screen.

Segal was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937. He graduated from Harvard University in 1958 as class poet and Latin salutatorian, later earning a master's degree and doctorate from the same institution. He taught classics at Yale University and held visiting positions at other universities including Oxford.

His academic work included the book *Roman Laughter: The Comedy of Plautus* (1968). The success of *Love Story* brought him widespread recognition, though he continued to publish both popular fiction and scholarly works until his death in 2010.
