He trained in commerce before turning to acting at around the age of 30, leaving a job as a sales manager to join a theatre company. His film debut came in 1996 in Cédric Klapisch's *When the Cat's Away*. He gained prominence with the leading role of Patrice Lumumba in the 2000 film *Lumumba*. He appeared as Black Tie in Brian De Palma's *Femme Fatale* (2002) and has since taken supporting roles in films including *Kingdom of Heaven* (2005), *Hitman* (2007), *Transporter 3* (2008), *3 Days to Kill* (2014) and *Bastille Day* (2016), as well as the series *The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon* (2023).
