Ernest Butterworth was a British actor and writer active in American silent films. Born in Lancashire, England, he appeared in numerous productions from the mid-1910s to the early 1930s, often in supporting or uncredited roles.

His writing credit includes suggesting the story for the 1918 comedy *Mr. Fix-It*. Butterworth is also known for acting roles in films such as *The Love Special* (1921), *The Knickerbocker Buckaroo* (1919) and *Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl* (1919). He died in California in 1950.

He was the father of actors Frank Butterworth, Ernest Butterworth Jr. and Joe Butterworth.
