## Biography

Ernest Day (also credited as Ernie Day) was a British cinematographer, camera operator and occasional director. Born in Surrey, he began working in the film industry in the 1940s as a clapper loader and focus puller before becoming a camera operator. He collaborated extensively with David Lean on films including *Lawrence of Arabia* (1962) and *Doctor Zhivago* (1965), and worked on Stanley Kubrick's *A Clockwork Orange* (1971) and several James Bond productions.

Day served as director of photography on fourteen feature films. His credits include *Revenge of the Pink Panther* (1978), *A Passage to India* (1984) — for which he received Academy Award and BAFTA nominations — and *Superman IV: The Quest for Peace* (1987). He also directed the theatrical films *Green Ice* (1981) and *Waltz Across Texas* (1982), and episodes of television series such as *The New Avengers* and *The Professionals*.

He was the brother of director Robert Day and died in Surrey in 2006.
