## Biography

Ernest Walter (1919–1999) was a British film editor. Born in Cardiff, Wales, he trained as an accountant before enlisting in the Welch Regiment during the Second World War. He served as a cameraman with the Army Film and Photographic Unit, filming the D-Day landings and subsequent Allied advances across Europe and in south-east Asia.

After the war he joined MGM as an editor and later worked freelance on feature films, including *The Haunting* (1963), *The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes* (1970), *10 Rillington Place* (1971) and *Nicholas and Alexandra* (1971). A stroke ended his editing career; he subsequently taught at the National Film School and wrote the manual *The Technique of the Film Cutting Room* (1973).
