## Biography

Ernst Deutsch (also credited as Ernest Dorian) was a Czech-Austrian actor of stage and screen. Born in Prague in 1890, he began his career in Vienna in 1914 and became prominent in the Expressionist theatre movement in Germany, notably originating the title role in Walter Hasenclever's *The Son* in 1916 and working with Max Reinhardt in Berlin.

He appeared in films from 1916, including as Famulus in *The Golem: How He Came into the World* (1920) and Dr Drossos in *Isle of the Dead* (1945). Following the rise of Nazism, he emigrated to the United States in 1933. After the Second World War he returned to Europe, resuming work in Vienna and Berlin. He received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 1948 Venice Film Festival for his performance in *The Trial* and is known internationally for playing Baron Kurtz in *The Third Man* (1949). He died in West Berlin in 1969.
