## Fi1m on Ernst Jacobi

> Ernst Jacobi was well suited to difficult men and figures of authority, but we value the reflective quality of his voice most. In *The White Ribbon*, he makes an older man's recollection worth attending to.

In *The White Ribbon* (2009), Ernst Jacobi supplies a voice for a man whose younger self we watch on screen. Christian Friedel plays the schoolteacher with a gentleness that helps us stay with Michael Haneke's harsh village mystery; Jacobi gives us the older man's recollection. His narration brings reflection and distance. We value that quiet contribution, though the affection we feel for the teacher owes much to Friedel. The casting keeps the act of remembering separate from the younger man's immediate experience.

Jacobi's early film roles date from 1957; wider notice came with character parts in the late 1970s and 1980s. He played the Gauleiter Löbsack in Volker Schlöndorff's *The Tin Drum* (1979), then Hans opposite Eva Mattes in Helma Sanders-Brahms's *Germany, Pale Mother* (1980). The latter gave him a leading role in a drama about the effects of Nazism and war on personal lives. Jan Troell later cast him as Adolf Hitler in *Hamsun* (1996). Those parts fit his reputation for serious, psychologically complicated characters, and for convincing figures of authority.

The recollection in *The White Ribbon* includes tenderness as well as cruelty. We were moved by the younger teacher's awkward courtship of Eva, played by Leonie Benesch, because their effort to be kind felt startling after so much adult severity. Haneke allows that affection to occupy the same film as cruelty, and the older voice holds both within one recollection. Christian Berger's black-and-white photography makes the long scrutiny worth enduring, although the severity can become repetitive.

Jacobi's regular work as a narrator and dubbing actor gives us another way into a career so often associated with difficult or broken men. That reputation can encourage us to listen for severity when the useful quality is reflection. We recommend *The White Ribbon* with the warning that Haneke offers little relief, however welcome the courtship is. Then try *Germany, Pale Mother* to see what Jacobi does with a leading role.

## Biography

After completing his Abitur he trained as an actor at the Max-Reinhardt-Schule in Berlin and studied mime in Paris and London. He worked at the Burgtheater in Vienna from 1977 to 1987 and at the Schauspielhaus Zürich from 1987 to 1992.

Jacobi is known for his role as Löbsack in *The Tin Drum* (1979) and as the narrator, the School Teacher as an Old Man (voice), in *The White Ribbon* (2009).
