## Biography

Eugen Schüfftan (also credited as Eugene Shuftan) was a German cinematographer. Born in Breslau, Silesia (now Wrocław, Poland), he began working in film in the 1920s after a background in painting and architecture.

He invented the Schüfftan process, a mirror-based special effects technique used to combine live action with miniature sets. It was employed on films including *Metropolis* (1927). Schüfftan worked on numerous productions in Germany, France and the United States, serving as director of photography on *People on Sunday* (1930), *Port of Shadows* (1938), *Eyes Without a Face* (1960) and *The Hustler* (1961).

He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White for *The Hustler*. Schüfftan died in New York City in 1977.
