## Biography

Eugène Lourié (also credited as Eugene Lourié) was a Russian-French production designer, art director and director. Born Yevgeny Lure on 8 April 1903 in Kharkov (now Kharkiv, Ukraine), he moved to France in the early 1920s and began working in film as a set decorator from 1927. In the 1930s he collaborated frequently with Jean Renoir, serving as production designer or art director on *Grand Illusion* (1937) and *The Rules of the Game* (1939).

Lourié moved to the United States in 1941 and continued working in Hollywood, contributing to films including *Limelight* (1952) and later science-fiction features. He directed *The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms* (1953) and *Gorgo* (1961). He was posthumously inducted into the Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame in 2011 and died in Los Angeles on 26 May 1991.
