## Biography

Eva Mattes is a German-Austrian actress born on 14 December 1954 in Tegernsee, Germany. She began her career in the early 1970s and appeared in several films directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, including *The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant* (1972) as Gabriele von Kant, *Jail Bait*, *Effi Briest* and *In a Year of 13 Moons* (1978).

Mattes is also known for her work with Werner Herzog, playing Eva in *Stroszek* (1977) and Marie in *Woyzeck* (1979). Her other film credits include *Germany, Pale Mother* (1980) and *Enemy at the Gates* (2001) as Mother Filipov. On television she played Klara Blum in the long-running series *Tatort*. She has received awards including a Bavarian Film Award for Best Actress.
