She is cast, again and again, as the feisty, down-to-earth Welsh woman, and after twenty years that is a fence rather than a description. She has said herself that "I wasn't the typical telly leading lady" and was told so after auditions early on. The best of her work has come when a writer lets the flinch go somewhere, as Davies did on *Torchwood*.
