## Fi1m on Eve Myles

> Eve Myles plays women who cannot stop caring and suspect it may be a fault. She held the early years of *Torchwood* together, and British television has been handing her versions of the same woman ever since; she keeps finding something new in her.

Watch Gwen Cooper in the first series of *Torchwood* (2006). She is a police officer who has walked into a secret organisation full of people who have seen too much to be surprised, and Eve Myles plays her as the one person among them who still is. She flinches. John Barrowman's Jack Harkness treats death as part of the costume; Burn Gorman's Owen Harper sneers because the alternative is shaking. Myles keeps Gwen's face open, so that when the programme does something cruel, and it does that often, we watch it land on somebody.

That was the part Russell T Davies wrote for her. She had spent most of a decade as Ceri Lewis in the BBC Wales drama *Belonging* (2000–2009), then turned up in a 2005 episode of *Doctor Who* as a servant girl called Gwyneth, and Davies built the lead of his spin-off around what he saw. After *Torchwood* ended in 2011 the work broadened without changing shape: period drama in *Little Dorrit*, *Victoria* and *Merlin*, crime in *Broadchurch* (2015), where she played Claire Ripley, and in *We Hunt Together*, theatre with the RSC and the National Theatre, and the title role in *Keeping Faith*, made in Welsh and English as *Un Bore Mercher*, between 2017 and 2020. Lately there have been thrillers, *The Guest* and *Hijack*. We have not reviewed them and will not pretend to.

What she does, and what most of these parts ask her to do, is play a woman whose caring has gone past the point where it is any use to her. Gwen keeps a hand in the ordinary world when everyone around her has let go, and Myles never plays that as heroism; she plays it as a habit Gwen cannot break and half wishes she could. Through the uneven first two series we found ourselves watching her when the scene belonged to someone else, because hers were the only reactions we believed. Barrowman's grin does not do quiet. Myles does almost nothing but quiet, and it carried the programme until the scripts caught up with her in the third series.

The caveat is the word that follows her around. She is cast, again and again, as the feisty, down-to-earth Welsh woman, and after twenty years that is a fence rather than a description. She has said herself that "I wasn't the typical telly leading lady" and was told so after auditions early on. The best of her work has come when a writer lets the flinch go somewhere, as Davies did on *Torchwood*. Someone should write her a woman who does not care at all, and see what happens to it.
