## Biography

Ewa Smal is a Polish film editor. She was born on 19 June 1949 in Berlin and graduated in 1985 from the part-time Higher Vocational Film Editing Studies programme at the Łódź Film School. She began working in film in the 1970s as an assistant director before turning to editing; she has worked as an independent editor since 1986 on more than forty productions.

Smal edited several episodes of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s *Decalogue* series (1989), including *Decalogue V*, as well as the related *A Short Film About Love* (1988) and *A Short Film About Killing* (1988). Other credits include *Europa Europa* (1990) and a long collaboration with director Marek Koterski on films such as *Day of the Wacko* (2002) and *Wszyscy jesteśmy Chrystusami* (2006). She has twice won the Film Editing Award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and received the Polish Film Award (Eagle) for Best Editing. She is a member of the Polish Film Academy and was awarded the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis in 2016.
