## Fi1m on Ewan McGregor

> Ewan McGregor makes unreliable men easy to spend time with, and we rate him most highly when a film makes use of that appeal. He can turn charm cold with little fuss, but unclear writing can leave him looking hesitant.

Renton’s jokes make the daily routine of *Trainspotting* (1996) seem briefly bearable, and Ewan McGregor makes it easy to stay in his company. We laughed with these men, then felt uneasy about how readily we had accepted their lives. McGregor’s ease with humour is crucial: he gives us little opportunity to sit back and congratulate ourselves on knowing better. Danny Boyle also lets Ewen Bremner’s Spud and Robert Carlyle’s Begbie unsettle the comedy, so Renton’s appeal is never the only thing shaping a scene. We recommend the film warmly, though the editing sometimes hurries past suffering that deserves more time.

Boyle’s *Shallow Grave* (1994) began their collaboration, and the two early films remain a useful place to start with McGregor. The *Star Wars* prequels (1999–2005), in which he played Obi-Wan Kenobi, took him into large-scale franchise work. He also moved through musicals, action films and dramas, before playing both Emmit and Ray Stussy in the third series of *Fargo* (2017). That variety matters less to us than the question of what each part asks him to do with his charm.

In Soderbergh’s spy thriller *Haywire* (2011), the charm has become a way of managing people. His Kenneth runs the firm and has the tight friendliness of someone already calculating what another person costs him. McGregor keeps that calculation close enough to the surface to make the friendliness unpleasant, without making the man implausible. The film can be chilly between its fights, but here his tightness is useful: Kenneth belongs among the men who underestimate the woman at its centre.

*The End of Oak Street* (2026) shows the limit of what he can do with uncertain writing. David Robert Mitchell’s film makes Greg Platt the weak point in the marriage but never decides how it feels about him, and McGregor cannot find a firm way to play that indecision. Anne Hathaway has the clearer task as Denise, holding the household together and becoming fiercely practical when the animals arrive. She carries the film; his hesitation is less productive than Kenneth’s coldness because the script has not made Greg clear enough. Start with *Trainspotting*, then try *Haywire* to see how little reassurance McGregor’s charm needs to offer.

## Biography

Ewan Gordon McGregor is a Scottish actor. He was born on 31 March 1971 in Perth, Scotland, and studied drama at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He left before completing the course after securing a role in the television series *Lipstick on Your Collar* (1993).

McGregor gained prominence for his role as Mark Renton in *Trainspotting* (1996). He is known for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the *Star Wars* prequel trilogy (1999–2005) and subsequent appearances, as well as for roles in *Moulin Rouge!* (2001), *Big Fish* (2003) and *Angels & Demons* (2009). He made his directorial debut with *American Pastoral* (2016).

For his performance in the third season of *Fargo* (2017), McGregor won a Golden Globe Award. He received a Primetime Emmy Award for his role in the miniseries *Obi-Wan Kenobi* (2022). His credits include *Haywire* (2011) as Kenneth and *The End of Oak Street* (2026) as Greg Platt. In 2013 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama and charity.
