## Biography

Ferdinando Scarfiotti was an Italian art director and production designer. Born on 6 March 1941 in Potenza Picena, Marche, he studied architecture at the University of Rome before working in opera and theatre design.

He began his film career with Bernardo Bertolucci on *The Conformist* (1970) and Luchino Visconti on *Death in Venice* (1971). Scarfiotti later collaborated on *American Gigolo* (1980), *Cat People* (1982), *Scarface* (1983), *The Last Emperor* (1987) and *Toys* (1992). He won a BAFTA Award for *Death in Venice* and an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for *The Last Emperor*.
