## Fi1m on Fernanda Montenegro

> Fernanda Montenegro can make a difficult woman understandable without making her agreeable. We value the patience of her acting in *Central Station*, where concern for a child never quite cures Dora’s bad temper.

Dora writes letters for other people in *Central Station* (1998), with little interest in the feelings she puts into words. Montenegro leaves that indifference visible: we have to spend time with the woman before we have much reason to like her. Walter Salles gives her a familiar road-drama role, the reluctant adult travelling with a child, and she makes the woman’s selfishness uncomfortable to watch. There is no early invitation to forgive her.

The international breakthrough of *Central Station* came well into a career spent chiefly in theatre and television. Her film work dates from the mid-1960s, with Madame Carlota in *Hour of the Star* (1986) among the earlier parts. Her film appearances have been less frequent than her stage and television work; Dora should not have to stand for all of it.

She has credited theatre with teaching her to attend to the other people working alongside her. That makes sense of her partnership with Vinícius de Oliveira, whose Josué has enough hardness to resist Dora. Salles lets their mutual distrust persist, and neither actor has to make the character especially winning. We were moved by Montenegro’s reluctant signs of concern for the boy, because she keeps Dora’s impatience visible as the feeling grows.

Not every reassurance in *Central Station* is earned. The screenplay, credited to João Emanuel Carneiro, Marcos Bernstein and Salles, sometimes makes Dora’s change too easy to anticipate. Montenegro is more persuasive when she leaves us uncertain about how much generosity this woman can manage. We would rather watch her struggle with another person’s company than have the script settle our opinion of her.

After Dora came the compassionate Compadecida in *O Auto da Compadecida* (2000), with *Invisible Life* (2019) among her later film appearances. She reunited with Salles for *I'm Still Here* (2024). For a first encounter, choose *Central Station* and give Dora time to be disagreeable.

## Biography

Fernanda Montenegro is a Brazilian actress. Born Arlette Pinheiro Esteves da Silva on 16 October 1929 in Rio de Janeiro, she began working in theatre in 1950 and later appeared in television and film.

She is known for her role as Isadora 'Dora' Teixeira in *Central Station* (1998), for which she received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Other notable film roles include appearances in *Four Days in September* (1997), *A Dog's Will* (2000), *Olga* (2004), *Love in the Time of Cholera* (2007), *Invisible Life* (2019) and *I'm Still Here* (2024).

Montenegro was the first Brazilian to win an International Emmy Award for Best Actress, for her performance in *Sweet Mother* (2013). She was married to actor and director Fernando Torres from 1953 until his death in 2008; their daughter Fernanda Torres is also an actress.
