## Fi1m on Finn Bennett

> Finn Bennett has spent his career so far as the young man who is waiting to be told what to do, and he is convincing enough at it that directors keep casting him that way. Whether he can take charge is the open question.

In *Backrooms* (2026) he and Lukita Maxwell carry the camcorder half of the film, as Bobby and Kat, two young people who film everything because they have never known another way of looking at a room. It is a small part and it asks for the thing Bennett does most naturally: he watches, and he lets the older actors have the weight. Chiwetel Ejiofor does the film's best acting with his shoulders. Bennett does his with a camera between him and whatever is coming, and he is entirely plausible as someone who has never put it down.

He started as a child, with a guest part in *Top Boy* (2013), and spent the following years in the kind of television that gets you noticed by casting directors and nobody else: *Liar* (2017), *Kiri* (2018), *Domina* (2021), where he played Marcellus. *Hope Gap* (2019) was his first feature. The turn came with *True Detective: Night Country* (2024), where Issa López gave him Officer Peter Prior, a main role, and scenes opposite Jodie Foster and John Hawkes. Most critics thought he held his own, and the settled view since has been of an actor good at earnest, conflicted young men caught between the people giving the orders. We have not written about that season on its own, so we will leave the praise to others.

*Warfare* (2025) is the best thing we have seen him in and the one that tells us least about him, which is how Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza wanted it. Bennett is John, one of the platoon alongside Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn and Kit Connor. Nobody has a photograph of a girlfriend or a story about home; we know these men by their jobs and their fear. We spent the second half of that film watching the men at the edge of the frame, Bennett among them, and found them harder to bear than the men at the centre, because with no story to hold on to there was nothing to read on their faces except how frightened they were. An ensemble like that lives or dies on whether the men at the back look as if they belong there, and he does.

The question now is what else he can do. In *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* (2026) he plays Prince Aerion Targaryen, a vain and cruel young man under a peroxide wig, and it is by his own account a departure: "I've always been a really lovely boy." We have not reviewed it and will not pretend to a view. But an actor who has built a career on being the decent one, and who has had the sense to notice, is usually more interesting once he stops. Lovely boys get cast for a decade. We are more curious about the wig.
