## Fi1m on Finn Carter

> Finn Carter is persuasive as a woman who knows what she is doing and has little need to announce it. *Tremors* gives that plain-spoken authority a purpose, and remains the clearest reason to seek her out.

Finn Carter's Rhonda LeBeck is useful company when something frightening is happening in *Tremors* (1990): she is allowed to think, and we believe she knows what she is talking about. As the seismologist, Carter brings a no-nonsense authority to Ron Underwood's creature feature. She makes intelligence an appealing quality without turning Rhonda into someone who stands apart from the neighbours. It is a good performance in a generous film, and the clearest reason to seek Carter out.

Rhonda brought wider recognition after a run in *As the World Turns* (1985–1988) and a film debut in *How I Got into College* (1989). What followed did not establish Carter as a regular feature lead, though *Sweet Justice* (1992) gave her a leading action role and *Ghosts of Mississippi* (1996) a supporting part. Her frequent casting as capable professional women is easy to understand. The disappointment is that a performance as assured as Rhonda did not lead to more sustained opportunities of comparable prominence.

S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock deserve credit for writing Rhonda as someone whose intelligence counts, rather than merely giving her a scientific job title. Carter's naturalistic delivery suits their interest in people who have something useful to contribute, even when they are frightened. We were surprised by how much we worried about these neighbours, because they kept helping one another despite their own fear. Rhonda helps that feeling take hold: her competence gives us another reason to want this group to get through the trouble.

That quiet competence needs a screenplay willing to make use of it; a professional title alone would not be much of a part. *Tremors* gives Carter enough to do within the group for her steadiness to matter, even when the occasional puppet is less convincing. We would not mistake the shortage of later leading roles for a failure of this performance. Start here, and pay attention to the person the film trusts to think.
