## Fi1m on Finn Cole

> Finn Cole's habit is to watch. He spent eight years as the young man at the edge of a criminal family, keeping the books. Give him a room to read and he is good; alone on the seabed, he has nobody to read.

The thing Finn Cole does is stand a little back from a conversation and take it in. As Michael Gray in *Peaky Blinders*, from the second series in 2014 to the end in 2022, and as J Cody in *Animal Kingdom* from 2016 to 2022, he played the young man who arrives in a family that does violence for a living and, rather than joining the shouting, learns where the money is kept. He does not act clever. He listens, visibly, and after a while you find you are watching the people he is watching to see what he has seen. It is a small instrument, and in a room full of louder ones it is a useful one.

He got the first of those parts at 18, off an audition tape his brother Joe Cole arranged, and for six years he was playing the same sort of role on two continents at once, one British crime family and one American. That is a great deal of practice at one thing, and the nearest anyone has come to a criticism of him is that the two parts sat rather close together. Films came in the gaps: *Slaughterhouse Rulez* (2018), *Dreamland* (2019) opposite Margot Robbie, a young Jakob in *F9* (2021). He made his stage debut in *Red Speedo* in 2024. Then Alex Parkinson's *Last Breath* (2025) handed him a film to carry.

It casts him as Chris Lemons, a diver cut off from his ship and left on the seabed while the men above try to reach him. He trained in scuba for it, which was the practical part. He is earnest and open, which suits a man other people are trying to save. But the film's best acting happens in dive control, where Mark Bonnar's Craig refuses to raise his voice however many red lights come on, and Cole is not in that room. He is alone in the dark for much of the running time, and a seabed is a hard place to act from: there is nobody to listen to, so the thing he does best has nothing to do. We felt for Lemons throughout and rather less for the performance, and we caught ourselves waiting for the cut back to Bonnar. That is not entirely Cole's fault. It is the part.

He has said he likes 'becoming a jack-of-all-trades', and the diving suggests he means it. Learn the skills by all means. What we would most like is to see him back at a table where everybody is lying, working out who is lying worst. If you have not seen it, *Peaky Blinders* from its second series is where he arrives, and where you can watch the habit form.
