## Biography

Florence Reece was an American social activist, poet and folksong writer. She was born on 12 April 1900 in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, and died on 3 August 1986 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Reece wrote the labour song "Which Side Are You On?" in 1931 during the Harlan County War strike, in which her husband Sam Reece was a union organiser. She appeared as Self in the 1976 documentary film *Harlan County U.S.A.*, singing the song.
