## Biography

Florence Vidor (née Cobb, later Arto) was an American silent film actress. Born in Houston, Texas, on 23 July 1895, she began her screen career in 1916 after marrying director King Vidor, who helped secure her first contract with Vitagraph Studios.

She appeared in numerous silent features, often in sophisticated or aristocratic roles, and gained early recognition for *Hail the Woman* (1921). Among her best-known performances were Charlotte Braun in *The Marriage Circle* (1924) and Countess Ostermann in Ernst Lubitsch’s *The Patriot* (1928). Her career ended with the transition to sound; she retired in 1929 after difficulties with *Chinatown Nights*.

Vidor later married violinist Jascha Heifetz in 1928. She died in Pacific Palisades, California, on 3 November 1977.
