## Biography

Francesco Rosi was an Italian film director and screenwriter. Born in Naples in 1922, he began his career assisting Luchino Visconti on neorealist films including *La Terra Trema* (1948) and later worked with Michelangelo Antonioni.

Rosi made his directorial debut with *The Challenge* (1958). He directed *Salvatore Giuliano* (1962), *Hands Over the City* (1963), *Many Wars Ago* (1970), *The Mattei Affair* (1972), *Illustrious Corpses* (1976), *Christ Stopped at Eboli* (1979) and *Three Brothers* (1981). His films frequently examined political and social themes in contemporary Italy. *The Mattei Affair* won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1972. Rosi died in Rome in 2015.
