## Biography

Frank E. Woods (1860–1939) was an American screenwriter of the silent era. He wrote for approximately 90 films between 1908 and 1925, beginning his career as a writer with the Biograph Company. He is best known for his collaborations with director D. W. Griffith, including the screenplay for *The Birth of a Nation* (1915) and writing credits on *Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages* (1916).

Woods was also a pioneering film reviewer. He was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He later publicly expressed regret for his involvement with *The Birth of a Nation*.
