## Biography

Frank Galati (1943–2023) was an American writer, director and actor. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1988 film *The Accidental Tourist* with Lawrence Kasdan, an adaptation of Anne Tyler’s novel that received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Galati was a prominent figure in Chicago theatre. He was a long-time ensemble member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and an associate director at the Goodman Theatre. He adapted John Steinbeck’s *The Grapes of Wrath* for the stage; the production won two Tony Awards in 1990, for Best Play and Best Direction of a Play. He also directed Broadway productions including *Ragtime* (1998). Galati taught theatre at Northwestern University for many years.
