## Biography

Frank McCarthy was an American film producer. Born in Richmond, Virginia, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1933. After working as a journalist and press agent, he served during the Second World War as secretary of the General Staff of the United States Department of War and briefly as Assistant Secretary of State for Administration in 1945.

McCarthy moved to Hollywood after the war and produced films for 20th Century Fox and later Universal Studios. He spent nearly twenty years developing a biographical film about General George S. Patton; *Patton* (1970), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and starring George C. Scott, won the Academy Award for Best Picture. As producer, McCarthy accepted the award and also accepted Scott’s Oscar on his behalf before returning it the following day in accordance with the actor’s wishes.
