## Fi1m on Frank Spotnitz

> Frank Spotnitz is a skilled collaborative storyteller whose mysteries work best when the people give us a reason to follow them. We recommend his television work on *The X-Files* warmly, with more patience required for its first cinema outing.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson keep us watching *The X-Files* (1993), even when another withheld explanation begins to test our patience. Their partnership gives the mysteries a reason to matter beyond the next disclosure. Frank Spotnitz helped write both its self-contained stories and its continuing conspiracies, and we value his part in making the programme such absorbing company. The qualification is important: its fondness for secrecy can become a habit rather than a source of suspense.

Spotnitz joined the writing staff in 1994 and went on to write or co-write more than 40 episodes. His collaborators included Chris Carter, Vince Gilligan and John Shiban, and his contribution covered both self-contained cases and the continuing conspiracy stories. That breadth matters: the programme could offer an evening's story as well as reasons to return. We would be wary of treating its pleasures, or its frustrations, as any one writer's doing.

For *The X-Files* (1998), Spotnitz and Carter devised the story, with Carter writing the screenplay. The dialogue has wit, and the central partnership survives a plot that grows harder to follow. We grew irritated as new complications arrived before the script had made clear why they mattered. The film remains a decent thriller, but routine action and the work of keeping track make it a qualified recommendation.

With *The Man in the High Castle* (2015), he developed Philip K. Dick's novel for television and ran the first season, adding characters to sustain the expanded story. *Medici: Masters of Florence* (2016) took him into period drama about power, ambition and Renaissance patronage. He also adapted the collaborative writers' room methods of *The X-Files* for European productions. For a first encounter with his work, choose the television *The X-Files* and leave the 1998 film until the partnership has earned some goodwill.

## Biography

Frank Spotnitz is an American television writer and producer. He joined the writing staff of *The X-Files* in 1994 and remained for eight of its nine seasons, writing or co-writing more than 40 episodes and serving as executive producer for four years. He also directed two episodes of the series and co-wrote both feature films, *The X-Files: Fight the Future* (1998) and *The X-Files: I Want to Believe* (2008).

Spotnitz was born in 1960 in Camp Zama, Japan. He graduated from UCLA and earned an MFA in screenwriting from the American Film Institute. Before entering television, he worked as a journalist for United Press International, the Associated Press and magazines including *Entertainment Weekly* and *Rolling Stone*. He later created or developed series including *The Man in the High Castle* (2015), *Medici: Masters of Florence* (2016) and *Leonardo* (2021), and founded Big Light Productions in London.
