He joined the series at the start of its third series and appeared in 39 of its 80 episodes, as well as the 1971 feature film, the stage adaptation and the 2016 film version of the series. Williams was often cast as clergymen and appeared in similar roles in other sitcoms including *You Rang, M'Lord?* and *Hi-de-Hi!*. His other credits include appearances in *Monty Python's Flying Circus*, *Jabberwocky* (1977) and *Revenge of the Pink Panther* (1978).
