## Biography

Fred F. Finklehoffe was an American screenwriter and film producer. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1932, where he met his frequent collaborator John Monks Jr. Together they wrote the play *Brother Rat*, which premiered on Broadway in 1936 and was later adapted into a 1938 film; Finklehoffe also wrote the screenplay for its 1940 sequel, *Brother Rat and a Baby*.

Under contract to MGM, Finklehoffe contributed screenplays to several musicals, including *Strike Up the Band* (1940), *For Me and My Gal* (1942) and *Meet Me in St. Louis* (1944). He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for the latter, shared with Irving Brecher. He later co-wrote and produced *The Egg and I* (1947) and wrote screenplays for *At War with the Army* (1950) and *The Stooge* (1952).

Finklehoffe also worked as a producer on Broadway, notably on *The Heiress*.
