## Biography

Fred Guiol (1898–1964) was an American film director and screenwriter. He worked at the Hal Roach Studios for many years, first as a property man and later as a director. There he directed several of Laurel and Hardy's earliest short films in 1927.

Guiol collaborated with director George Stevens on a number of projects. He wrote the screenplay for *Gunga Din* (1939) and, with Ivan Moffat, adapted Edna Ferber's novel for the film *Giant* (1956), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
