## Biography

Fred McLeod Wilcox was an American film director who worked primarily for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He began his career in the studio's publicity department in the late 1920s and advanced to assistant director before making his feature debut with *Lassie Come Home* (1943).

Wilcox directed several family films at MGM, including *Courage of Lassie* (1946), *Hills of Home* (1948) and *The Secret Garden* (1949). He is best known for the science-fiction film *Forbidden Planet* (1956). After leaving MGM in 1957 he directed, produced and co-wrote the independent drama *I Passed for White* (1960).

Wilcox was born in Tazewell, Virginia, on 22 December 1907 and died in Beverly Hills, California, on 23 September 1964.
