## Biography

Fred Schuler is a German cinematographer. Born in Munich in 1940, he moved to the United States at the age of 22 and worked initially as an engineer on film camera development before becoming a camera operator on numerous New York productions in the 1970s.

He served as camera operator on films including *Taxi Driver* (1976), *Dog Day Afternoon* (1975), *Annie Hall* (1977), *The Deer Hunter* (1978) and *Manhattan* (1979). Schuler made his debut as director of photography on *Gloria* (1980) and went on to shoot *The King of Comedy* (1982) for Martin Scorsese, as well as *Arthur* (1981), *Fletch* (1985) and *The Woman in Red* (1984). He became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers in 1986.

In the mid-1990s Schuler returned to Germany, where he has worked on features such as *Der Totmacher* (1995) and several films directed by Romuald Karmakar.
