## Biography

Fred Stewart (7 December 1906 – 5 December 1970) was an American actor who appeared in stage, film and television productions. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he attended Oglethorpe University and began his career operating the Playmakers Theatre there from 1924 to 1927 before making his Broadway debut in 1931.

His stage work included original Broadway casts of *The Crucible* (1953), *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof* (1955) and *More Stately Mansions* (1967–68). Film roles included Del Loomis in *Splendor in the Grass* (1961), Dr. Stuart in *In the Heat of the Night* (1967) and Mr. VanRensaeller in *A New Leaf* (1971). He was a founding member of the Actors Studio and died in New York City while appearing in the soap opera *Love of Life*.
