## Biography

Fred W. Berger (1908–2003) was an American film and television editor. He began working in the industry in the 1930s as an assistant editor and received his first editing credit in 1943 on the Hopalong Cassidy western *False Colors*.

Over a career spanning nearly sixty years, Berger edited dozens of feature films and hundreds of television episodes. His credits include 86 episodes of the series *M*A*S*H* (1972–1977) and many episodes of *Dallas* (1978–1991), as well as supervising editor roles on series such as *Gunsmoke* and *Have Gun – Will Travel*. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing for *The Hot Rock* (1972) and won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on *M*A*S*H*, with further nominations for that series and *Dallas*.

Berger was a founding member and past president of the American Cinema Editors, and received its Career Achievement Award in 1997.
