## Fi1m on Freda Dowie

> Freda Dowie’s strength is the weariness she allows into roles that could settle for patient suffering. Her Mother in *Distant Voices, Still Lives* gives us ample reason to seek her out.

In *Distant Voices, Still Lives* (1988), Freda Dowie lets us see how tired Mother is without making us doubt her affection for her family. Pete Postlethwaite’s Father makes that family frightening to belong to, and Dowie has to keep us caring about the people who endure him. We were moved by her restraint, because the weariness makes clear how much effort that endurance takes. She makes Mother worth watching without turning her into a lesson in goodness.

That part brought wider notice after a long stretch of television work, which began in 1959. Earlier appearances included the Nun in *The Omen* (1976) and the dual role of the Sibyl and Caesonia in *I, Claudius* (1976). By the time Terence Davies cast her, she had become accustomed to playing victims. Davies gives that familiar casting a purpose: Mother’s responses keep us interested in the family even when their life together looks intolerable. The limitation of such parts is obvious, but so is the care Dowie takes with this one.

Davies worked with Dowie on the physicality and tone of a remembered person, giving her something more precise to play than stoicism. That attention matters in a film where communal singing is so affecting: Mother’s weariness keeps the hardship of this particular household present. Some characters remain frustratingly remote, and her work cannot solve that problem. Nor does the part escape the familiar casting of Dowie as a woman expected to put up with what others do.

Television remained a substantial part of her work afterwards, with Mrs Green in *Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit* (1990) and Florrie Hutchinson in *Our Friends in the North* (1996). The latter gives her a mother’s role in a drama whose domestic scenes have the patience and difficult silences we value. That is useful company for her work with Davies: these are dramas prepared to spend time with family members who cannot easily say what they feel. Start with *Distant Voices, Still Lives*, and allow the singing its time; it earns the attention.
