## Fi1m on Frédéric Pierrot

> Frédéric Pierrot makes listening worth watching. We value the restraint he brings to ensemble dramas, where his thoughtful, sometimes wounded men give the other characters someone credible to talk to.

Pierrot is often at his most interesting when he is listening. His unshowy performances give thoughtful, sometimes wounded men a life beyond whatever advice or authority they are expected to supply. He is useful in an ensemble because he can suggest that a character has things to consider without making a show of considering them. His first feature was Bertrand Tavernier's *La Vie et rien d'autre* (1989). Tavernier became a recurring collaborator as Pierrot built a career largely in supporting roles.

Ken Loach's *Land and Freedom* (1995), with Pierrot as Bernard, is where we would start. We were moved by its volunteers being allowed to argue, doubt and think, without the film treating uncertainty as a weakness. Ian Hart keeps the drama human, but the group's discussions matter enough for us to attend to more than the leading performance. It is a useful setting for an actor whose strengths include listening and working within a company. The dialogue sometimes goes on too long and the framing story explains too much, reservations that need not put anyone off this thoughtful ensemble drama.

The supporting work continued through *I've Loved You So Long* (2008), as Capitaine Fauré for Philippe Claudel, and *Polisse* (2011), as Baloo for Maïwenn. Baloo's volatility usefully complicates the idea of Pierrot as simply a calm, dependable presence. The recurring police officers, doctors and therapists could make the casting sound repetitive. What interests us is the capacity for hurt in these men, and the restraint with which he lets it register.

*En thérapie* (2021–22), with Pierrot leading as Dr Philippe Dayan, made his work more widely recognised. A therapist is a sensible leading role for an actor so attentive to silence. We would not treat the earlier supporting parts as years spent waiting for a proper job. Begin with *Land and Freedom*, though, and expect to spend the evening with a company rather than a star.

## Biography
