## Biography

Fredric Brown (29 October 1906 – 11 March 1972) was an American writer of science fiction, fantasy and mystery fiction. He attended Hughes High School in Cincinnati, spent a year at Hanover College in Indiana and a semester at the University of Cincinnati, but did not complete a degree. After working in an office and as a proofreader and typesetter for the Milwaukee Journal, he began selling short stories to pulp magazines in 1936.

Brown became known for his humorous short fiction, particularly his mastery of the 'short short' form, and for novels such as the mystery *The Fabulous Clipjoint* (1947), which won an Edgar Award, and the science-fiction novel *What Mad Universe* (1949). His 1944 short story 'Arena' provided the basis for a 1967 episode of the television series *Star Trek*, for which he received story credit. Several of his stories were also adapted for *Alfred Hitchcock Presents*.
