## Biography

Friedrich Gorenstein (also credited as Fridrikh Gorenshteyn) was a Soviet and German Russian-language author and screenwriter. Born on 18 March 1932 in Kiev, he studied mining in Dnipropetrovsk and worked as a miner and mining engineer before moving to Moscow in 1962 to complete a scenarist course at the State Film University.

He wrote numerous screenplays, most notably co-authoring the script for Andrei Tarkovsky’s *Solaris* (1972). Other credits include *The Slave of Love* (1976, directed by Nikita Mikhalkov). In the Soviet Union only one prose work was published during his lifetime, the autobiographical novella *The House with the Tower* (1964).

Gorenstein emigrated to West Germany in 1980 and continued writing in Berlin until his death on 2 March 2002. His works often explored themes of Stalinism and antisemitism.
