Born Frieda Wrightman in Edinburgh, she adopted her mother's surname professionally. She made her Broadway debut in *The Truth About Blayds* (1922) and originated the role of Sorel Bliss in Noël Coward's *Hay Fever* (1925). Other stage credits included *Escape* (1927). Inescort moved to Hollywood and made her film debut in *The Dark Angel* (1935). Her screen roles included Mary Beaton in *Mary of Scotland* (1936), Miss Caroline Bingley in *Pride and Prejudice* (1940), Dorothy Joyce in *The Letter* (1940), and Mrs Ann Vickers in *A Place in the Sun* (1951). She appeared in films and television until the early 1960s.
