## Biography

Friedrich Hollaender, also credited as Frederick Hollander, was a German film composer and author. He was born in London on 18 October 1896 and died in Munich on 18 January 1976. His father was the operetta composer Victor Hollaender. The family returned to Berlin in 1899, where Hollaender studied at the Stern Conservatory under Engelbert Humperdinck and later worked as a répétiteur in Prague.

In the 1920s he composed for Max Reinhardt productions and became active in Berlin cabaret. His breakthrough came with the score for *The Blue Angel* (1930). After leaving Nazi Germany in 1933, he emigrated to the United States the following year. There he wrote music for over a hundred films, including *Destry Rides Again* (1939), *Here Comes Mr. Jordan* (1941), *A Foreign Affair* (1948), *Born Yesterday* (1950) and *Sabrina* (1954). He received four Academy Award nominations and returned to Germany in 1956.
