## Fi1m on G.D. Spradlin

> G.D. Spradlin made corrupt authority sound matter-of-fact, which made it more disturbing. We rate him for the precision of those supporting performances, especially when Francis Ford Coppola gave him someone powerful to play.

In *The Godfather Part II* (1974), Senator Pat Geary demands a bribe as though the demand requires no defence. Spradlin's matter-of-fact delivery makes the senator's corruption feel routine, and that is what gives the speech its force. We were repelled by how reasonable he made the transaction sound. He does not need to signal villainy more insistently; the ease with which Geary asks is ugly enough. It is a precise supporting performance in a film that deserves close attention, and a useful place to see how little Spradlin needs to do.

Francis Ford Coppola uses that assurance again in *Apocalypse Now* (1979), casting Spradlin as General Corman, who briefs the mission to terminate Colonel Kurtz. The general's authority makes an appalling instruction sound like an item of professional business. Spradlin is valuable here because he makes the man giving the order credible, rather than merely offering a sinister figure for us to distrust. These are the performances to start with: in two films concerned with the exercise of power, he makes it easy to believe that other people will do as these men say.

His television guest roles in the 1960s often came through casting director Fred Roos. The Coppola films brought his breakthrough in the 1970s, while sport supplied further opportunities to exercise stern authority: Coach Moreland Smith in *One on One* (1977), and B.A. Strothers in *North Dallas Forty* (1979). Later parts included Reverend Lemon in *Ed Wood* (1994) and Ben Bradlee in *Dick* (1999), his final film. The recurring attraction for casting was clear: Spradlin could make a man accustomed to giving orders immediately convincing.

The reservation is that the casting could be narrow: politicians, officers and coaches all called upon much the same assurance. Repetition makes it easier to notice the familiar authority figure before the particular man, though Geary's corruption and Corman's rigidity give Spradlin different things to work with. We would look first to the performances in which that plain delivery makes the character more troubling, rather than ask every appearance to justify a whole evening. Begin with Geary, and listen to how little the request for money troubles him.
