## Fi1m on Garret Dillahunt

> Garret Dillahunt can make a kitchen feel suspect with the suggestion of something left unsaid. We value his supporting work, but the comedy matters too: expecting menace every time means overlooking a useful part of what he does.

In *Lanterns* (2026), Garret Dillahunt and Poorna Jagannathan can make a kitchen feel faintly threatening. Their Will and Zoe Macon are a couple the case keeps returning to, and they suggest an agreement that neither needs to spell out. We felt uneasy watching them together: each seems to know what the other will leave unsaid. Dillahunt gives us a reason to pay attention away from the leads. That is useful in a programme which too often interrupts Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, its strongest pairing, for a plot that will not settle.

*Deadwood* (2004–2005) made a persuasive case against expecting the same thing from him twice. In David Milch’s series, his breakthrough, Dillahunt played two unrelated characters, Jack McCall and Francis Wolcott. The distinction matters in a career often associated with villains and authority figures, particularly in Westerns and crime stories. It is easy to notice the threat in such casting and overlook the actor’s usefulness to an ensemble.

*No Country for Old Men* (2007) is the film we would recommend most readily, even to someone who usually avoids Westerns. For the Coens, he plays Wendell in a patient, frightening thriller whose severity can be wearying. His supporting work with Steve McQueen, as Armsby in *12 Years a Slave* (2013), belongs to the same strand of focused ensemble acting. We value that willingness to fit the film, although these smaller parts are not enough on their own to explain why he is worth following.

*Raising Hope* (2010–2014), with Dillahunt taking a sitcom lead as Burt Chance, offers a different place to start. Comedy interrupts the succession of threatening men and makes the familiar casting look less inevitable. We would welcome more of it, rather than assume that another sinister part is the best use of him. Try Burt Chance before deciding Dillahunt ought always to make us nervous.
