## Biography

Garrett Elsden Fort (5 June 1900 – 26 October 1945) was an American screenwriter, playwright and short story writer. Born in New York City, he began his career in the silent era as a gateman at Famous Players and later wrote under contract for Cecil B. DeMille and Paramount Pictures.

He contributed to numerous 1930s horror films, including the screenplays for *Dracula* (1931), *Frankenstein* (1931), *Dracula's Daughter* (1936) and *The Devil-Doll* (1936). Other credits include adaptations for *The Lost Patrol* (1934), *The Mark of Zorro* (1940) and *Blood on the Sun* (1945).

A follower of the Indian spiritual master Meher Baba, Fort travelled to India in 1937 while working on a screenplay based on Baba's philosophy. He died in a Hollywood hotel room from an overdose of sleeping pills.
