## Biography

Gavin Lambert was a British-born screenwriter, novelist, biographer and film critic. Born in East Grinstead, Sussex, on 23 July 1924, he was educated at Cheltenham College and Magdalen College, Oxford. He edited the film journal Sight & Sound from 1950 to 1955 and wrote criticism for The Sunday Times and The Guardian.

Lambert moved to Hollywood in the mid-1950s. His screenwriting credits include the adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s novel for Sons and Lovers (1960), co-written with T. E. B. Clarke, and I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977); both received Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay. He also wrote the screenplays for Bitter Victory (1957) and The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone (1961), and directed Another Sky (1955). Among his novels is Inside Daisy Clover (1963), which he adapted for the 1965 film. He became a United States citizen in 1964 and wrote biographies of film figures including Norma Shearer, Alla Nazimova and Natalie Wood. Lambert died in Los Angeles on 17 July 2005.
