## Fi1m on Gemma Jones

> Gemma Jones makes a quiet supporting part tell us how a household works. We rate her ability to suggest what goes unsaid; the frustration is how readily a film can mistake her familiar presence for enough of a part.

At the Swans’ dinner table in *Wicked Little Letters* (2024), Gemma Jones says almost nothing. Timothy Spall’s Edward corrects his grown daughter’s posture; Jones, as Victoria, shows what it costs to live by his rules. We went quite still because the small humiliations and her compliance made the household’s cruelty plain. Cristina Casali’s brown paint, lace and closed curtains make the Swan house feel airless. Thea Sharrock’s comedy keeps retreating from that sadder story, but Jones gives us a reason to wish it would stay there.

Her familiar place in film ensembles followed wider television recognition in the 1970s, including *The Duchess of Duke Street*. *Sense and Sensibility* (1995) brought her greater prominence in film as Mrs Dashwood, under Ang Lee’s direction. We recommend that adaptation warmly, while recognising that Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet do much of the work that makes it moving. Its performances keep the feelings awkward and recognisable even when the setting looks too comfortable for anyone’s difficulties.

The recurring parts made the pattern more pronounced: Pamela Jones in *Bridget Jones’s Diary* (2001), then the school matron Poppy Pomfrey in *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets* (2002). Later casting has often kept her among mothers and dowagers, and the risk is that familiarity does the work the script ought to do. A character’s family position tells us little about how rewarding the performance will be. In *Wicked Little Letters*, the wife who scarcely speaks is one of the few people we want to understand better.

By *Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy* (2025), the danger is plain. Michael Morris brings Jones back as Pamela alongside Jim Broadbent as Bridget’s father, then gives the pair scarcely anything to do. We find enough tenderness in the film’s treatment of grief to recommend it to those already attached to Bridget, but Jones’s presence is frustratingly underused. That is a failure of the part she has been given. Start with *Sense and Sensibility*; approach *Wicked Little Letters* for the actors, with modest expectations of the comedy.

## Biography

Gemma Jones is an English actress who has worked in theatre, film and television since the early 1960s. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and is the daughter of actor Griffith Jones.

Her film roles include Mrs Dashwood in *Sense and Sensibility* (1995), Bridget's mother in the *Bridget Jones* series (2001–2025), Madam Pomfrey in three *Harry Potter* films (2002–2011), Ivy in *Rocketman* (2019), and Victoria Swan in *Wicked Little Letters* (2024). On television she has appeared in *The Crown*, *Gentleman Jack* and many other series.
