## Biography

Gene de Paul was an American composer, songwriter and pianist. Born in New York City, he studied piano privately and worked as a pianist in dance orchestras and as an arranger before serving in the US Army during the Second World War. He joined ASCAP in 1941.

De Paul wrote songs for several Hollywood films, often in collaboration with lyricists Johnny Mercer and Don Raye. His credits include the songs for *Seven Brides for Seven Brothers* (1954), *Alice in Wonderland* (1951) and *The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad* (1949). He received an Academy Award nomination for the song “Pig Foot Pete” from *Hellzapoppin'* (1941). On Broadway he composed the score for *Li'l Abner* (1956). He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985.
