## Biography

Gene Perret was an American comedy writer and producer. Born in Philadelphia, he began his career as an electrical engineer before turning to comedy writing in the late 1960s. He contributed material to performers including Phyllis Diller and Slappy White, and joined Bob Hope’s writing staff in 1969, serving for nearly three decades and becoming head writer for the final years of Hope’s career.

Perret wrote for numerous television series, including episodes of *All in the Family* (1971), *Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In*, *The Carol Burnett Show* (staff writer 1973–1978), *Welcome Back, Kotter* (1975), *Three’s Company* (1977) and *Mama’s Family*. He produced episodes of *Welcome Back, Kotter* and *Three’s Company*. He received three Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on *The Carol Burnett Show* and authored more than 40 books on comedy writing, including *Comedy Writing Step by Step*.
