Gene Thompson was an American television and radio writer. Born Eugene Allen Thompson on 28 June 1924 in San Francisco, California, he began his career in his teens after meeting Groucho Marx, who encouraged him to write comedy sketches and helped secure him a position on the radio programme *Duffy's Tavern*.

He later wrote advertising copy before moving into television scripting in the 1960s. Thompson contributed episodes to series including *The Addams Family* (1964), *My Three Sons*, *The Bob Newhart Show* (1972), *Cannon* (1971) and *Columbo* (1971). In the late 1970s he turned to writing mystery novels.

Thompson died on 14 April 2001 in Los Angeles, California.
