## Biography

Georg John (born Georg Jacobsohn) was a German stage and film actor. He began his theatre career around 1900 on smaller stages and travelling companies, with engagements in Wilhelmshaven, Altona, Bochum and elsewhere; in 1914 he worked as an actor and producer at the Vaterländische Schauspiele in Vienna. He made his film debut in the mid-1910s and appeared regularly in silent cinema.

John is known for character roles in films by Fritz Lang and F. W. Murnau, including the beggar in *Destiny* (1921), Pesch in *Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler* (1922), Mime and Alberich in *Die Nibelungen* (1924), the night watchman in *The Last Laugh* (1924), and the blind panhandler in *M* (1931). He also appeared in *Metropolis* (1927) and *The Testament of Dr. Mabuse* (1933). As a Jew, he was deported to the Łódź Ghetto in 1941, where he died on 18 November.
